The world of business - an exciting, stressful and sometimes confusing adventure. Let’s face it, loving your career is certainly the new black. As a brand consultant for more than 11 years in this career focused world, I have been privileged to work with many incredible visionaries, each with powerful business intentions. Despite the prosperous nature of their work (financially and socially) however, a common trend prevails - a boundry-less life in which anxiety and disconnection dictate behavior and attitude. As successful as they appeared from the outside, on the inside, stress was their master. Sadly, this same reality is also the day-to-day challenge within many businesses; an outside expression of "wow and awe" supported by an inside nature of unsustainable chaos.
Building The Little House of Big Things.
I wouldn't say this business came about during a grand life epiphany of frustration. For me it was more like little moments over many years adding to a growing concern about "the way things are just done”. Feeling that pressure to stay at work, even though I had finished; seeing leaders behave in destructive and toxic ways; the masking of behavior with "that's just a part of this industry"; and mostly, seeing incredibly motivated and talented individuals crush under the unrealistic expectations of performance - whether from themselves or the people around them. When my concern finally outweighed my contentment, I returned to university only to once again see these behaviors in studies and research, this time joined by evidence of their negative impact on the health and performance of individuals.
Through these dedicated spouts of studies and days within the working world, I have also seen how such behavior can be immensely reduced with the application of useful tools, and the establishment of quality foundations at both the people and business level. Contrary to the perceptions out there, useful tools don’t always follow the black & white principles that often pervade working mindsets & approaches. This is because the world we are working in is very different technologically, globally and generationally, to what it used to be. So it's time for a different approach.
Taking little steps towards what I hope is a bigger change in business, The Little House of Big Things Ltd. brings together the knowledge and practice of Brand Psychology & Design and Human Resources & Organization Behavior, to create useful and accessible foundations for businesses; practical and accessible tools & services relevant to owners, leaders, contractors, full and part-time working parents, and highly focused professionals, across all business sizes, that collectively foster a way of working that is much more healthy and inspiring.
